Blackberry Winter

In blackberry winter

we are walking

in an old pasture

where wildflowers dance.

Together, we lie

in a field of wild clover

laughing at a world

that thought  it defined us.

Time passes, clouds gather,

years fade the sunlight.

We struggle to cling

to our youth, our dreams.

We see that we are not forever.

The false warmth of young love

is bitten by frost.

In blackberry winter

I left you, crying,

I never knew summer

could be so cold.
