Silver Challis

“Alas! She laughed as he swooped into the parlor like some minor royalty. “He has surely forgotten his station!” She turned her silver Challis toward he lips and drank of the blood within., no one noticing as she licked a stray drop from her lip. “Soon, he would be reminded,” she smiled.

Wishing to Disappear

The warmth of July summer entranced me. I’d come to the beach to escape. Make-up covered my bruised face, I’d used my married sisters ID to check into the motel. I didn’t really feel safe, even walking on the beach in the windy dusk on this isolated island. I knew he had his sources, his “people”. I walked near the edge of thee beach grasses, ready to dash into the light of a lobby or bar.

Suddenly, I heard his voice on the deck on the motel. “Where is she!” he yelled.

This IS atrophy I thought, frozen in my steps.

Moonlight Ravine

The only sound in the forest was the crunch of leaves underfoot. That silence told me something that my mother had taught me as a child. When the birds stop their singing and the squirrels cease their chatter, there is a reason. DSCN2143

As I reached the edge of a sharp-edged boulder, I stopped and listened for a moment. Getting between a mother bear and her cubs was a bad idea, I reminded myself. I listened for the noisy crunch and possible growling of bears, but nothing caught my attention..

Though it was nearing dusk, the sun peeked though the clouds for a moment and I expected to hear the forest fill up with sound again. Nothing.

It was November 1st, “Los Dias de los Muertes” I thought, half smiling. I began to let my mind wander. I had always heard that an ancient battle between Native Americans took place near this rock. In fact, it was know as “Broken Skull Rock.” I assumed that the name referred more to the shape of the jagged rock, split into two sharp pieces, than it did to an actual event. But no one seemed to know for sure.

The sun disappeared behind the mountain, and soon the darkness began to creep in. I felt a spider web hit my face as I quickened my step to get back to the clearing where I’d parked. An owl let out its call, and a shiver went up my spine.

A wisp of smoke appeared from the chimney of an old cabin across a steep ravine. I froze in my footsteps as I hear the creaking of a door and saw a glint of light coming through in the shadows.

“Hello?” I called, hoping to warn the cabins’ inhabitant of my presence. I got no answer. I could see the glint of a candle though the window, as the light faded. My heart began to race.. No one was supposed to have lived here for years.

The owls call rang out again. I heard the door creek shut again. A sliver of moonlight appeared through newly barren trees. I looked back across the ravine and found myself lying on my belly, having tripped over a root. My ankle throbbing, my head pounding,, I saw my car a hundred yards ahead.

From now on, I would take my hikes in the park on “Los Dias de los Muertes!”

Morning Scare

I am shaking, tears stain my cheeks, my heart throbbing. Running to his room, I think, “Oh, it was just a dream,” then, realize it wasn’t. What scares me most is the truth.

Dragon’s Tail

“Oh, my God!” screamed Sarah as she clung tightly to the back of Joey’s leather Jacket.. He couldn’t hear her. It was just a noise to him, with his black , flame covered helmet and new Harley Davidson Motorcycle. He was rushing down the famous “Dragon’s Tail” road in extreme western North Carolina that has 11 miles with over 318 curves.

It is one of the most popular roads in the country for motorcyclist. A lot of them don’t make it down, some get hurt a few killed. A photographer has even made an enterprise of the horrifying curvy road. He takes photos in one of the worst curves, and sells them to the riders(if they survive.)

Her heart was racing as they rounded the last curve. Tears rolled down her crimson cheeks. Joey was laughing-LAUGHING! That Sob had nearly killed her, scared her to death and he thought it was funny. She’d show him another meaning of “road” Hit it!

As the Line Was Crossed, Her Life became her Own.

He stood at the end of the trailer’s living room, yelling, cussing, throwing things, like he always did when he was angry.

She, of course, was in the hall by the washer, crying, her face speckled. red streaks, tears dripping onto her shirt.

I’m so sick of your bitchin, woman!” he shouted from the doorway, ready to run out, after he had yelled his final insult, stomped and delivered his final accusation.

Just step over the line and see what happens.” he yelled as he went for the door. As the line was crossed, he stared in silence.

Finals

Finals

The morning sun rose slowly from a horizon filled with red clouds. It seems she had waited forever for this day. The endless midnight struggles to remember the materials that she had studied for three long years at the university. She recalled the nights cuddling her little one, the evenings when there was no time to study because he needed her care. Today was the day-final exams. Would everything she had worked for become a the fulfillment of a dream or the beginning of another hopeless barrier. To think that a few professors stood between her and hope was excruciating.
